From Theory to Practice: Quantum Computing with World’s Leading Quantum Expert Barry C. Sanders

From 1 to 10 April 2026, Prof. Barry C. Sanders (University of Calgary, Quantum City, Canada & CERN’s Open Quantum Institute, Switzerland), a leading expert in quantum information science, visited Slovakia to deliver a lecture series and colloquium organized within the eduQUTE activities of Slovak National Center for Quantum Technologies.

CourseQUTE Lecture Series: Quantum Computing – Principles, Possibilities and Practicalities

The lectures, held at the Institute of Physics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (IP SAS), offered a structured introduction to quantum computers, covering both foundational concepts and current developments in the field. Prof. Sanders guided participants through key topics including quantum states, computation models, and emerging technological directions.

In addition to the technical material, the lectures also touched on broader questions — including the evolving landscape of governance and legislation around quantum technologies, an area of growing importance as the field matures.

The seminar attracted around 50 participants, including PhD students, researchers, and professionals from outside academia, reflecting the expanding relevance of quantum technologies across disciplines and sectors. The format encouraged vivid discussions and exchange, contributing to a lively and engaged atmosphere throughout the series.

The event also highlighted the ongoing efforts of the Research Center for Quantum Information (RCQI at IP SAS), where research in quantum computing and quantum information has been developed systematically for more than three decades.

Colloquium at Comenius University

As part of his visit, Prof. Sanders delivered a colloquium entitled Superposing Coherent States for Fun and Profit at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, Comenius University in Bratislava.

The talk focused on the role of coherent-state superpositions in quantum optics, combining theoretical insights with broader perspectives on their applications. The colloquium attracted a wide audience and led to a discussion, with questions ranging from fundamental aspects of quantum states to potential experimental realizations and future research directions.

The event provided a valuable opportunity for students and researchers to engage with advanced topics beyond standard curricula and to interact directly with an internationally recognized expert.

Strengthening the Quantum Community

Prof. Sanders’ visit represented an important step in connecting the Slovak research environment with the international quantum community. The visit was part of the ongoing courseQUTE lecture series bringing together students, researchers, and professionals and contributed to knowledge exchange, networking, and the continued development of quantum expertise in the region. We look forward to continuing this series with further speakers and topics in the near future.
