Celebrating 100 Years of Quantum Mechanics in Slovakia

In 2025, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of quantum mechanics – the revolutionary scientific idea that changed our understanding of the world. From lasers and magnetic resonance, through secure communication and quantum computers to breakthroughs in sensors, material science, and medicine – quantum science has become the cornerstone of modern life.

To celebrate this milestone, the United Nations (UN) has officially declared 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ2025), recognizing past achievements and the future potential of quantum discoveries. This year-long celebration aims to raise public awareness, inspire future generations, and promote international collaboration in the rapidly evolving field of quantum science and technology.

About the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology 2025

Background and History

IYQ began as an initiative by scientists, educators, and historians who saw the centenary of quantum mechanics as an opportunity to increase public awareness of its profound impact on humanity. Once considered a purely theoretical concept, quantum mechanics has become the foundation of many technologies we depend on daily – from smartphones to secure communication.

The IYQ initiative quickly gained international support, backed by leading scientific organizations such as the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr), and the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IUHPST). With UNESCO's endorsement and sponsorship from over 70 countries, the idea was approved by the United Nations in June 2024.

This global initiative aims to showcase the beauty, power, and importance of quantum science and make it accessible to everyone.

Mission and Vision

The mission of IYQ2025 is to engage people from all walks of life in exploring and appreciating the impact of quantum science on society. From professional seminars and specialized training for the private sector to hands-on quantum experiments and outreach activities for the general public – IYQ invites everyone to get involved.

Why Celebrate in Slovakia?

Slovakia is actively collaborating on research and innovation in quantum technologies, contributing to advancements in quantum communication networks and quantum cryptography. Through initiatives such as the Slovak Quantum Communication Infrastructure (skQCI) and the work of research institutions like the Research Center for Quantum Information (RCQI) at the Institute of Physics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Slovakia plays a important role in building the future of secure communication and quantum technologies.

Slovakia is proud to contribute to the global quantum ecosystem through pioneering research and innovation, further strengthening its role in the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI) by collaborating with international partners.
