The Institute of Physics SAS Opened Its Laboratories to Young Scientists
What does physics look like in real life? Ten young science enthusiasts set out to answer this question by taking part in the Summer School of Young Scientists 2026, organized for the eighth time by the All4Science civic association in cooperation with the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The aim of the programme is to show young people that science is not only about textbooks, but above all about curiosity, experimentation, and searching for answers to questions that shape our understanding of the world.
From 13 to 17 July, the Institute of Physics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences opened its laboratories to ten participants aged 12 to 17, giving them a unique opportunity to experience a leading research environment and meet both established scientists and early-career researchers.
The programme was designed to let participants experience science first-hand rather than simply learn about it. Over the course of five days, they explored the mysteries of quantum physics, experimented with light, discovered advanced materials and nuclear physics, visited research laboratories, carried out optical experiments, discussed scientific topics with researchers, and concluded the week by preparing and presenting their own scientific posters.
The programme was led by Institute of Physics researchers Matúš Balogh, Irena Gejdoš-Janotová, Dušan Janičkovič, Naďa Mrkývková, Magdaléna Šolcová, Peter Švec, Mário Ziman, together with our interns Hanka Partelová and Vadym Shvydkyi. Through lectures, hands-on workshops, and laboratory activities, they showed the participants that physics is a dynamic, creative field full of fascinating discoveries. Meeting scientists in person, asking questions, and performing experiments themselves made the experience truly memorable.

Promoting interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is one of the priorities of the Institute of Physics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. We believe that initiatives like this help young people discover the excitement of scientific exploration and may inspire some of them to pursue a future career in research.
We would like to thank the organizers of the Summer School of Young Scientists, the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and all our colleagues who devoted their time and enthusiasm to working with young talents. Above all, we thank the participants for their curiosity, enthusiasm, and countless thoughtful questions. We hope they left the Institute of Physics not only with new knowledge, but also with the conviction that science is an exciting adventure open to everyone.
